Australia's Food Delivery App "Menulog" Collapses After 20 Years-7Pillars

One of the biggest chapters in the history of the Australian food delivery industry is drawing to a close.

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ a major shake-up of the quickly changing food delivery scenario in Australia, Menulog, the only significant delivery platform born in Australia, has announced its intention to close by the end of this ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌month. The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ company, which has been the go-to source for local restaurants and customers for almost 20 years, will stop taking orders after November 26, and this news will be a great surprise to many people in the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌industry.

The Rise and Decline of a Local Icon

Established in Sydney in 2006, Menulog was way ahead of its time when delivery via apps was mainstream. The site helped Aussies to order takeaways with ease and grew rapidly, getting about 80 per cent market share in 2014. Its later purchase by the UK-based Just Eat in 2015 announced a new dawn, when escalating competition altered the playing field.

According‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ to IBISWorld, Menulog’s market share decreased to 23.8% after that; however, Uber Eats’ market share is 53.8% at ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌present. Menulog announced to customers in an email that it had gone through rough times and, as such, had to make a tough choice to shut down its own.

What Does The Closure Mean?

Unused vouchers and credits at Menulog will be retained until the last day of operation, November 26 at 11.59 P.M. AEDT. The closure will impact approximately 120 employees in Australia, and individuals entitled to such compensation will receive an upper-voluntary assistance payment for four weeks of their wages.

A Shift in Australia’s Food Delivery Future

With‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Menulog’s exit, the curtain falls on the only major homegrown delivery service in Australia, serving as a reminder of how rapidly the sector has changed. The closure is framed as the issue of local platforms struggling to compete at scale with large international rivals that are slowly taking over the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌market.

The end of a distinctly Australian legacy, the farewell to many restaurants and loyal users, is a business closure.
